‘Gone South’ season 2 examines The Dixie Mafia: traveling criminals who terrorized the south from the 1960s-1980s
C13Originals’ true crime series “Gone South” is back for a second season after investigating the unsolved murder of Margaret Coon, a former Louisiana sex crimes prosecutor, in season 1. The 8-episode season captivated audiences, won an Edward R. Murrow Award, topped podcast charts, and received over 6 million downloads.
In season 2, host Jed Lipinski explores The Dixie Mafia, a confederation of traveling criminals who started terrorizing the Southeastern United States in the early 1960s. This rag-tag group had hundreds of members, specialized in scams, heists, and murder, with its headquarters situated in Biloxi, Mississippi.
The Dixie Mafia’s leader was a skilled and charming outlaw named Kirksey Nix, the estranged son of an Oklahoma politician. After committing a murder in New Orleans, Kirksey was sentenced to life in prison at Angola in 1972. At this time, it appeared The Dixie Mafia had gone extinct.
Unexpectedly, 15 years later, sitting criminal court judge Vincent Sherry and his wife Margaret, a mayoral candidate for the city of Biloxi, were assassinated. The case ran cold and authorities learned The Dixie Mafia’s reign was not yet over.
Tune in all season to hear firsthand interviews with Kirksey from prison, people connected to the Dixie Mafia, its victims, and more. Jed is an Emmy and Peabody Award-nominated producer/journalist. His brother, Tom, produces this podcast along with Ken Lee and Chris Corcoran (Chief Content Officer and Founding Partner, Cadence13).
Of the project, Chris said, “Jed and Tom Lipinski are a big part of the C13Originals family, and it’s been a pleasure building this incredible franchise, and storytelling with them. Season One was an incredible hit, and I can’t wait for everyone to hear this latest story, one that’s sure to grab everyone’s attention from start to finish and continue to showcase our incredible production and storytelling abilities”
“I lived in the South for years but I’d never heard of The Dixie Mafia until we started reporting our last podcast about the death of Margaret Coon,” said Jed Lipinski. “Some cops we spoke to described The Dixie Mafia as the most fearsome group of criminals the South has ever seen, while others were convinced the group is a myth. Figuring out where the truth lies, and going deep into their most notorious crimes, has been endlessly fascinating. It takes a lot of time, effort and resources to tell investigative true-crime stories like this, and we couldn’t have asked for smarter and more supportive partners than the folks at Cadence13.”
The first 2 episodes of “Gone South’s” second season drop on October 19, with new weekly episodes posted on Wednesdays wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts.
