The Academy Awards have sparked iconic moments and impacted culture since the first ceremony in 1929. “The Academy Museum Podcast” explores the array of remarkable stories from film history and kicks off with “And the Oscar Goes To…,” the first of a multi-season series going behind-the-scenes with stars, creators, and more. Often, the awards provide commentary on the world, reflecting the social, political, and economic themes from that year.

Host Jacqueline Stewart, the Chief Artistic and Programming Officer of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and a MacArthur Fellow, is joined by guests to guide listeners through many of these pivotal moments and themes this season.

Begin the 10-episode series at episode 1 to hear insightful interviews from Oscar winners, film artists, activists, scholars, industry leaders, and more. Episodes also feature archival audio and never-before-heard bonus content, only available on the podcast. So far, episodes run less than 45 minutes on average.

In “2002: This Door Has Been Opened,” relive the historic ceremony hosted by Whoopi Goldberg. Halle Berry accepted the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her outstanding performance as Leticia Musgrove in 2001’s Monster’s Ball. She was the first Black woman to win in this category. Berry delivered a poignant acceptance speech and was part of many incredible moments celebrating Black excellence that night.

Also during the ceremony, Sidney Poitier scored a lifetime achievement award and Denzel Washington won for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Training Day. Many believed that night signaled a shift in history, but we learned why this was not necessarily the case and Berry called her win “one of my biggest heartbreaks.” Berry joined Stewart to unpack 2002’s ceremony, how she felt, and how the win changed her career.

This series is presented by The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and LAist Studios. Tune in weekly for new episodes.
