Andy Cohen, Rosie O’Donnell, John Waters, and more guests join ‘Raised by Ricki with Ricki Lake and Kalen Allen’
Lemonada presents “Raised by Ricki with Ricki Lake and Kalen Allen,” a rewatch and cultural retrospective series. Episodes look back at the iconic ’90s talk show, The Ricki Lake Show, and share memories from the era with special guests.
Ricki Lake co-hosts this series with TV personality and digital creator Kalen Allen who went viral with his “Kalen Eats” food reaction series. He was hired by The Ellen DeGeneres Show to cover red carpet events, other assignments, later acted in Seth Rogan’s An American Pickle, and guest hosted Cakealikes, among other projects.
The co-hosting duo works well together, as Kalen bridges the gap between OG Ricki fans and younger generations who are just learning about Ricki for the first time. Upcoming guests will include Andy Cohen, Rosie O’Donnell, John Waters, producers, former talk show guests, and audience members. Episodes run less than an hour on average and can be streamed in any order.
If you’d like to learn more about Ricki’s background, start from episode 1 to hear how she jumped into acting, appeared in 1988’s Hairspray, grappled with personal struggles, and landed additional acting roles before hosting her original talk show that ran from 1993-2004. In the series, Ricki also shares behind the scenes stories and candidly explains what she was personally going through while her talk show aired.
Kids, young adults, and teens would flock home and tune into The Ricki Lake Show after school for conversations highlighting young people’s perspectives. The first podcast episode welcomed The Ricki Lake Show‘s former supervising producer, Stuart Krasnow, to dish on the show’s earliest days and its generational impact.
On an episode with Rosie O’Donnell, they discussed their friendship, balancing motherhood with filming their talk shows, and experiencing 9/11. The Rosie O’Donnell Show interviewed guests like Tom Cruise, Janet Jackson, and Madonna from 1996 to 2002.
Rosie shared she had never interviewed anyone before hosting the show and believes this is one of the reasons why audiences were endeared for 6 seasons. Rosie told Ricki and Kalen about her childhood, a time she bombed a high-paying gig, a phone call she had with Bill Clinton, and what it was like to come out after leaving daytime TV.
