‘Gone South’ host Jed Lipinski explains why it was important to share sex crimes prosecutor Margaret Coon’s story

February 2, 2022

In this episode of Podsauce, “Gone South” host Jed Lipinski discussed why he created a podcast about Margaret Coon’s death in 1987, a high-profile sex crimes prosecutor in Louisiana who was stabbed while walking her dog. Hosts Dax and Alesha also rolled out several podcast recommendations, including a soothing, self-help series, a podcast sharing successful entrepreneurs’ stories, and a nightmare-inducing true crime podcast.

For this week’s “Health is Wealth” segment, Alesha listened to “Anxiety Slayer with Shann and Anaga,” and enjoyed the guided meditation episode for dealing with worrying thoughts. She recommends this episode, but not while driving, since it’s so relaxing and you might fall into a meditative trance behind the wheel.

Dax shared his pick of the week, NPR’s “How I Built This with Guy Raz.” It was previously recommended by “You Better You Bet” host Ken Barkley when he and Nick Kostos stopped by Podsauce in November 2021. Dax started listening and was thrilled to recommend it this week. Guy interviews incredible people behind some of the world’s largest businesses, and the guests share their stories. This weekly series has released over 390 episodes to be streamed in any order. Dax is a pancake fan and listened to an interview with Kodiak Cakes’ creator, Joel Clark, who explained his business was over 15 years in the making and initially struggled for funding. Dax also listened to the episode with Discovery Channel’s creator, John Hendricks.

Next, “Gone South” host Jed Lipinski stopped by the show. Dax and Alesha are obsessed with the story, and the series has claimed a top 10 spot on iTunes for weeks. This C13Originals true crime podcast revolves around Margaret Coon’s unsolved murder and interviews people involved in the case. Jed originally heard Margaret’s story from a former DEA agent when he was working on his last documentary project, The Pharmacist. As an investigative journalist, Jed told Podsauce he relishes in telling people’s stories and exploring places.

Three decades later, Margaret’s story is as compelling as ever, and her community continues to mourn. Jed described Margaret as Tammany Parish, Louisiana’s “poster child” – she was a well-revered lawyer and took on some of the toughest cases in the community. Jed explained that her community is still shocked by how she was killed inside her patrolled and gated community.

While the murder remains unsolved, this investigative podcast revealed new information. Stream this bingeable 8-episode series from episode one to hear the entire story. Alesha analyzed this case with her expertise (she went to school for law!) and you’ll have to tune in to find out who she believes killed Margaret.

Jed recommended several podcasts including “To Live and Die in LA,” Suspect,” and “Hooked.” The director of “Gone South,” Lloyd Lochridge, worked on some of Jed’s favorite podcasts like Relative Unknown” and “Root of Evil.” Jed is a huge fan of Cadence13 podcasts!

If you’re a fan of “To Live and Die in LA,” check out “The Wonderland Murders,” all about the violent home invasion and robbery in Los Angeles, and the revenge saga that followed in 1981.
