Elise Loehnen chatted with Podsauce about her insightful interview podcast, “Pulling the Thread,” leaving Gwyneth Paltrow’s goop, and mental health during the pandemic. She also shared her curiosity for life, her dream guest lineup including Angela Davis, learning and laughing while listening to interesting podcasts, and more in this exclusive interview.
Elise co-hosted the goop Podcast with Gwyneth Paltrow for years and says it’s one of the highlights of her career. With the goop Podcast, Elise started actualizing her love of nourishing conversations in audio-only episodes. She found that people responded well to her hosting style and felt like they could relate to her based on the questions she asked.
In her series, Cadence13’s “Pulling the Thread,” Elise interviews fascinating folks in under 60-minute episodes. Guests like doctors, artists, thinkers, poets, and more discuss life and delve into the precise questions listeners want to hear.
Dax and Alesha were wondering which episodes first-time listeners should first tune into, and if Elise has recorded any favorites. Poet laureate Joy Harjo appeared on the first episode from September 2021, and Elise talked about the conversation’s energy. Elise spoke with Harriet Lerner, Ph.D in November 2021 about learning from her book, The Dance of Anger, especially in pandemic times. Another episode Elise recommends is Terry Real’s conversation on “Healing Male Depression,” exploring how the patriarchy wounds men.
Elise learns tremendously from her podcast’s guests and comes from a place of curiosity. She understands the importance of keeping an open mind and listening to what others are saying instead of jumping to conclusions and judgments. Elise wants listeners to explore her episodes’ archive, even if the topics are not relevant to their lives at the present moment, and cited a recent episode example about addiction and dopamine.
Of course, Alesha and Dax wondered if Gwyneth is a future podcast guest, and Elise wants everyone to stay tuned. Elise’s dream guest list includes professor/author Robin Wall Kimmerer and political activist Angela Davis.
Elise listens to a variety of podcasts and recommended “Scene On Radio,” a podcast where host John Biewen is joined by guests to discuss topics in mini-series covering whiteness and race, gender, and more. “Poog with Kate Berlant and Jacqueline Novak” is a play on the word “Goop” with the hosts’ own takes of the wellness industry. Elise loves the comedy podcast, “The Deep Dive with Jessica St. Clair and June Diane Raphael.”
