Björk breaks down her albums one by one in ‘Sonic Symbolism’ and unpacks her creative process for each
From euphoric beats to volcanic sounds, whispered vocals, rich thematic palettes, and an Icelandic octet, Björk is candidly unpacking each of her albums and analyzing her ideas on “Sonic Symbolism.” The songstress and creative mastermind immerses listeners in her world, bringing you behind the scenes of her records to share her writing process, lyrics, songs‘ textures, emotions, and more with her friends and collaborators in new episodes. Björk will also treat us to unreleased, alternate versions of songs and demos.
Each episode focuses on 1 album and runs less than an hour on average. Start the series from the first episode, especially if you’re a music fan appreciating Björk’s catalogue for the first time in chronological order. In the podcast’s trailer, Björk says, “In the conversations on this podcast, me and my friends try to capture which moods, timbres, and tempos were vibrating during each of my albums.”
Björk dissects her entire catalogue and thoughtfully shares her creative choices, insight on her personal life, and reveals more of her inner world. The first 3 episodes covered Björk’s albums Debut, Post, and Homogenic. In the Vespertine episode, hear about microbeats, swans, harps, winter world, celestial, whispered vocals and more.
Björk discussed Medúlla on episode 5 and shared about pre-civilizations, primordial energy, motherhood, archaeology, and influences like goth and folk. Upcoming episodes will cover her work through 2017’s Utopia. Björk also dives into the visual elements of her career, likening her album cover designs to homemade tarot cards depicting moments in time.
So far, Björk’s guests have included folks like philosopher/writer Oddný Eir and musicologist Ásmundur Jónsson. Björk announced her new album Fossora and she recently released her single, “Atopos.”
We think “Song Exploder” fans will also enjoy “Sonic Symbolism,” since Björk is breaking down records one at a time and listeners can find out how creative geniuses work.
“Björk: Sonic Symbolism” is presented by Mailchimp. Tune in for new episodes released until October 13.
