Claudia Winkleman and Professor Tanya Byron offer solutions for guests’ tricky problems in ‘How Did We Get Here?’
Real Life Stories presents the insightful and poignant series, “How Did We Get Here?” It’s kind of like the Talking Heads song “Once in a Lifetime” as the lyrics contemplate life and choices made: “And you may ask yourself, ‘Well, how did I get here?’ / What have I done?”
Hosts Claudia Winkleman and clinical psychologist Professor Tanya Byron hope to answer these questions with guests in unscripted and vulnerable conversations. We’ll hear parents and family members struggling in different aspects of their lives and seeking help when tackling universal themes. Claudia and Tanya provide guests with space to understand their problems, behaviors, relationships, and offer viable solutions for all parties to move forward with their lives.
Start the three seasons in any order, with topical conversations centering on the guests’ specific issues each episode. Running 50 minutes each on average, many of the episodes grapple with love, loss, forgiveness, and guilt. Additional topics include gender identity, mental health, parental estrangement, family dynamics, life after cancer, parenting a disabled child, and more. In season 2, listeners heard about maintaining romantic relationships, Autism Spectrum Disorder, parental suicide, parenting difficult children, extra-marital affairs, and childhood abuse. Season 3 covered topics like anxiety, PTSD, unexpected DNA test results, grief, trauma, and sexuality. The podcast has released over 40 episodes since 2020.
Listening to “How Did We Get Here?” is similar to the therapy sessions recorded in “How’s Work? with Esther Perel” and “Where Should We Begin? with Esther Perel.” These podcasts also help folks understand their issues, mediate problems, and cope with life’s challenges.
In a recent episode of Podsauce, “American Vigilante” host Sam Walker shared her podcast picks. She is fascinated with “How Did We Get Here?” and appreciates the hosts’ approach. Sam values Claudia and Tanya’s tips on how to communicate better and support one another in a variety of situations.
In an episode, Lidia and her daughter have separation anxiety. In season 1, Joanna discovered her husband was transitioning and was adapting to changes in the relationship. Naomi was struggling with her Crohn’s Disease and endometriosis diagnoses and wanted to feel less stuck with her situation. Sophie joined the podcast for advice when she was struggling to accept herself conceiving via IVF.
When Claire was 11, her father was arrested in front of her, and he was sent to prison. She is seeking a diagnosis for what she has been feeling all these years. In another episode, Rhian is struggling with an eating disorder and wants to heal. These are the kinds of scenarios Claudia and Tanya specialize in and strive to help with. There are bonus episodes checking in with guests from previous seasons in case you’ve heard the whole series and are left wondering what long-term changes have taken place since their session.
