‘Betwixt The Sheets: The History of Sex, Scandal & Society’ guides us through the spiciest and strangest parts of the past
Historian Kate Lister is asking us to join her “Betwixt The Sheets: The History of Sex, Scandal & Society” to explore the history of sex. If there’s one thing we can always count on humans doing throughout history, it’s fornicating and philandering. Kate is rooting through only the sexiest history we never got to hear about in class, whether it be corsets, royal sex spectators, ancient sex toys, and even the first vasectomy.
Relatively new to the podcasting sphere, “Betwixt The Sheets” began just this year in mid-March. This History Hit podcast is nearing its 20th episode, with each episode averaging to around 40 minutes a piece.
Entertaining, cheeky, and not at all lacking in educational value, “Betwixt The Sheets” is an easy add to our podcast queue. The charming Kate Lister takes us on a tour of the spiciest, and sometimes strangest, parts of history that we’ve all been desperate to hear about. From getting hot and heavy with the shockingly lusted-after King Henry VIII to the bumpy road of breast augmentations, this podcast somehow always finds a way to top itself with every episode.
Find out why doctors were using sex toys to treat back pain with writer, sex and gender historian Hallie Lieberman, or learn why kings and queens had spectators watch them consummate the marriage on their wedding night with author Eleanor Herman. Apparently, Queen Victoria I indulged herself in most areas of her life, including the bedroom. Also, did you know that vasectomies have been around for over 150 years? And the practice wasn’t always necessarily intended as a form of contraception.
It’s not all about sex, though. Considering the full title of this podcast is “Betwixt The Sheets: The History of Sex, Scandal & Society,” Kate also investigates a number of other topics, like the etymology of the term bedlam, the fascinating history of Vodou/Voodoo, and the unusual artifacts found inside the famous Surgeon’s Hall Museum in Edinburgh (skin wallet anyone?).
Funny, informative, and dare we say alluring, “Betwixt The Sheet: The History of Sex, Scandal & Society” is keeping it steamy and suggestive. Every episode teaches us something we never knew we never knew. For a delightful romp through the sheets of history, be sure to tune into this podcast.
