Radiotopia presents “The Stoop,” a podcast delving into identity and race with hosts Hana Baba and Leila Day. Episodes share stories from the Black diaspora we need to talk about – conversations on what it means to be Black and ways we discuss Blackness. We’ll hear a wide range of conversations with special guests like comedians, doctors, professors, podcasters, artists, authors, educators, soldiers, journalists, and more.

Stream “The Stoop” in any order, with over 80 standalone episodes to choose from, running under 35 minutes each on average.

In a recent “Stoop Special” episode, the co-hosts explored what it means to be “Black enough” and times they have felt “not Black enough. Broadcast journalist Joshua Johnson joined this episode to share “what it means to be told she ‘talks white.'” Comedian W. Kamau Bell shares why sometimes he has felt uncomfortable performing of Black audiences.

Beverly Adaeze, Dubai Denis, and Ahmed Abdelrahman shared some laughs and answered complex questions on their Blackness in America. The hosts discussed Black autism diagnoses in adulthood with special education professor Dr. Jamie Pearson and autism media consultant Diane Wright. Artist, author, illustrator, and Black autistic adult Ayanna Davis talked about her life.

Oprah’s hairstylist, Andre Walker, joined “The Stoop” in 2018 to chat about the hair typing system he created for Black people’s hair textures. But this system started some controversies in lack of representation for 4C women, and he candidly addressed these topics and more.

In the “IVF and Us” episode, reproductive endocrinologist Dr. Michael Thomas explained why Black women statistically have higher infertility rates and lower success rates with IVF. Charissa Jackson shared her struggles and journey with IVF.

Other episodes explored music, fatherhood, emigrating to America, queerness, being a Black introvert, and normalized corporal punishment – just to name a few topics. Laila shared why her ballet dreams disappeared as a kid and Aesha Ashe talked about her experience as a former professional ballerina. Dance educator/writer Theresa Ruth Howard discussed bodies, ballet, and skin tone.

Afro-vegan chef Bryant Terry described what being Blegan means (a portmanteau for Black vegan) and debated which country makes the best Jollof rice dish.

In October 2021, “Back Issue” hosts Josh Gwynn and Tracy Chapman stopped by to discuss booties, the “booty blues,” what the term “fast” means, and more. Professor Kamille Gentles-Peart studies the sociology of Black women’s bodies and shared her findings on this episode.

LeVar Burton, Stacey Abrams, David Oyelewo, Shangela, and more joined Hana and Leila on “The Sounds of Blackness” episode, part 1. The guests explored what sounds are uniquely Black to them. And in part 2, poet Nikki Giovanni joined the conversation.

Tune into “The Stoop” this Black History Month and all-year round for insightful and thoroughly-reported stories.
