‘Bad Weather Fans with Mike and Alex’ dish on how a heated Twitter feud started their popular sports podcast
What could possibly go wrong on a podcast hosted by a Knicks fan and a Nets fan? Hosts Mike Bisceglia and Alex Benesowitz agree to disagree and told Podsauce about their sports series that also covers the Jets, Giants, Mets, Yankees, and so much more. They shared the podcast’s origin story, why they love sports, and why it’s fun to chat about opposing teams.
The podcast began with Mike’s background in sports radio, rescuing his car from an impound lot in Newark, NJ, and arguing with someone on Twitter. This person turned out to be Alex, and they told Alesha and Dax about the tweet that sparked their conversation. Over longer virtual conversations, Alex (Knicks fan) and Mike (Nets fan) realized they had interesting perspectives and enjoyed chatting, so podcasting could work well. 120+ episodes and 2 years later, the series is going strong with weekly episodes.
The hosts explored what it’s like to cover 2 teams from New York City with fanbases that generally dislike each other.
Alex’s love for the Knicks started when he was growing up in the 1990s on Long Island with family and friends. Mike grew up in New Jersey and chatted about living a short car ride away from where the Nets played. His dad would bring him to see world-class players like Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, and one of Mike’s favorites, Dražen Petrović.
Mike and Alex talked about sorely missing sports during the pandemic and how fans have a renewed appreciation for live games since the world reopened.
Dax and Alesha asked about some of the craziest moments that caused the hosts to shake their heads in disbelief in reaction to their teams’ cringiest news.
Lastly, Alex and Mike shared their podcast picks. Alex listens to “Drink Champs” and “Bill Burr’s Monday Morning Podcast.” With his child, Mike listens to “The Adventures of Cairo,” a fiction series sharing life lessons.
