‘Buffering the Vampire Slayer’ is giving you a sign to rewatch the iconic supernatural series
Return to Sunnydale and relive the glory years given to us by Sarah Michelle Gellar with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer podcast, “Buffering the Vampire Slayer.” Hosted by professional musician Jenny Owen Youngs and writer/former goth teen Kristin Russo, this podcast is a glorious romp through every single episode of the supernatural show.
Youngs and Russo have been at this for a while; they’ve recorded over 195 episodes of the podcast. We know what you’re thinking: “that’s way more episodes than Buffy itself.” And you are correct. On the same RSS feed until recently, the podcast “Angel On Top” is an estranged sibling podcast recapping the Buffy spinoff, Angel. “Angel On Top” now has its own Apple Podcast page and RSS feed, so that’s where you can find them.
But, back to Buffy. Lovingly calling their subscribers Scoobies (in reference to Buffy’s and Sunnydale High’s Scooby Gang), Youngs and Russo are almost done taking us on a wild ride through all seven seasons of the show. The two hosts ooze unadulterated joy and adoration for Buffy the Vampire Slayer – but not so much that they aren’t providing thoughtful critiques and sociopolitical commentary on the series. We wouldn’t be surprised if you’re genuinely upset that you’re only discovering this podcast now.
As any good rewatch podcast does (and we know there are a lot of those out there) Youngs and Russo have been joined by many of the incredible cast members from the show. They’ve had on James Marsters, Charisma Carpenter, Seth Green, Kristine Sutherland, Harry Groener, Armin Shimmerman, and more to talk about their time on the show.
They are also known for hosting proms. Yes, a high school prom for all of the fans of their show. There are tickets still available, actually, for the Friday night taping of the podcast at said prom on March 11, 2022 (can be found at this link). Even more exciting, the prom is being hosted at the actual Sunnydale High, which is really just Torrance High School in Southern California.
Obviously, the two have created an incredible community around their love for all things Buffy. Even if you’re a first-time Buffy viewer, Youngs and Russo are the perfect podcasters to get you invested in the show. If all of this wasn’t enough to convince you, every single episode also comes with an original Buffy-inspired song from Youngs. Literally, at the end of every episode, she sings us a little jingle about Sarah Michelle Gellar or David Boreanaz or Alyson Hannigan or literally anything/anyone else!
If you’re looking for a sign to rewatch Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this is it. Check out “Buffering the Vampire Slayer.”
