‘The 12 Gays of Christmas with Brian Moylan’ talks Christmas movies with his LGBTQ+ friends
All of the Christmas classics with a rainbow twist. Brian Moylan, the one true Real Housewives fan AKA author of The Housewives: The Real Story Behind the Real Housewives and contributor to Vulture and The Guardian, is gathering his LGBTQ+ friends to talk about their all-time favorite holiday movies. “The 12 Gays of Christmas” is the ultimate gay Christmas podcast for those who just can’t help but start listening to Mariah Carey in July.
New since November of 2021, it’s just reached 10 episodes, averaging at about 45 minutes a pop. Moylan recently joined Podsauce for a special holiday episode alongside Bran Gray, one of the hosts of “Deck The Hallmark.”
Joining Moylan in making the Yuletide gay are celebrities like Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon, famous sex advice columnist-turned-podcaster Dan Savage, comedian Joe Dombrowski, internet and TV writer R. Eric Thomas and many more. They share their favorite Christmas stories, both heartwarming and cringe-y, discuss what about these movies make them their favorite, and whether or not those films qualify within the “queer canon” of Christmas movies.
Full of RuPaul’s Drag Race references and Moylan’s raunchy one liners, “The 12 Gays of Christmas with Brian Moylan” is truly delightful. They talk about some actual LGBTQ+ history, especially prevalent in post-World War II Christmas movies like A White Christmas and It’s a Wonderful Life, and point out the nonsensical ridiculousness of movies like Elf. Why was Mary Steenburgen so cool with letting a grown man stay with her young son? Truly, what is up with that?
Moyan and guests talk about tight elf pants, Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon vis-à-vis Stepmom, Gremlins (this one seems like a stretch), the Hallmark Christmas Movie Industrial Complex, and the lesbian erasure of Peppermint Patty in A Charlie Brown Christmas. It’s all a bit of a fever dream, but the good kind, like the one you get on Christmas night when you’ve eaten too much food and drank too much wine and need to lie down on the floor for just a minute but none of your family members woke you up and now it’s 3 AM and you barely recognize your own home.
Basically, if you’re wondering whether or not your favorite Christmas movie is a little gay, Moylan is here to tell you that yes, it most definitely is. Elf, The Grinch (both the original and Jim Carrey’s version), The Family Stone: yes, yes, and yes. And if you are so inclined to find out why, then you must listen to “The 12 Gays of Christmas with Brian Moylan.” They have yet to do Clea Duvall’s Happiest Season, or Netflix’s new Single All The Way, but we’re hoping Moyan will get to them. Make this Yuletide that much gayer with the ultimate gay Christmas movie podcast.
