‘Toxic: The Britney Spears Story’ tells all about the pop star’s life and legal drama
Pop icon Britney Spears has been through a lot this summer, and Stitcher/Witness Docs’ podcast has all the updates. In “Toxic: The Britney Spears Story,” hosts and comedians Tess Barker and Babs Gray cover Britney’s conservatorship drama, interview inside sources, and explain the legal system’s harsh realities.
Tess and Babs have researched her case and originally began analyzing Britney’s social media postings on the series “Britney’s Gram.” This podcast sparked further interest, as the hosts jumped through investigative rabbit holes and created “Toxic: The Britney Spears Story” podcast as her legal drama was unfolding.
Over the summer, we followed Britney’s story. The podcast’s first episode explains how Britney wound up in a conservatorship. In 2008, Britney was appointed a conservator after hospitalization and mental health struggles. Conservatorships occur when an individual is deemed unfit to take care of themselves, and a judge-appointed guardian/caretaker steps in to manage their finances and daily life. Her father, Jamie Spears, and an outside financial group were selected at conservators.
Britney wanted to regain control of her life and asked her father to terminate the conservatorship. Under his supervision, Britney was unable to make independent decisions in her life without his approval, and sought to move forward. After many court appearances, Jamie has agreed to step down as Britney’s conservator. In September 2021, Britney announced her engagement to Sam Asghari.
By the second episode, we take a trip down Britney’s career in the 1990s and 2000s. Britney’s ex-husband, Jason Alexander, appeared on the third episode. The childhood friends married in 2004 in Vegas. Jason shared how he was bamboozled by Britney’s team and family into signing an annulment after their marriage lasted only two days. On the show, Jason revealed her team claimed he and Britney could continue seeing each other and reassess their situation in a few months if he agreed by signing the documents.
In the seventh episode, we learn about Britney’s money debacle for the past 13 years. Hosts Tess and Babs dive into her financial records and remark on the flagrant discrepancies throughout. Listeners hear about Britney’s career comeback with her Circus tour in later years by the eighth episode, as well as the smoke-in-mirrors technique to keep her lesser-than-free status under wraps.
Britney’s court appearances are recapped in the ninth episode. By the end of the season, listeners hear that Britney’s situation has drawn awareness to more cases like hers.
