Imperative presents the true crime series “In the Land of Lies.” In 1993, Georgia police officer Michael Chapel was convicted for robbing and murdering 53-year-old Emogene Thompson. Thompson was shot execution style twice in the head outside a muffler shop after Chapel was previously assigned to a call.

Thompson reported that around half of $14,000 cash hidden in her trailer home was stolen. Chapel believed her son, who lived with her, was guilty. Thompson did not want to press charges, and Chapel allegedly said he’d attempt to recover the money. The money was never found.

Chapel received a life prison sentence, but new information could change everything with the potential to clear his name and prove his innocence. Stream “In the Land of Lies” from episode 1 to hear the full case unfold, hosted by Sean Kipe.

Kipe investigates Chapel’s story – a former officer who went from being a hero to a villain and has been in prison for 29 years. This podcast tries to uncover what really happened between Chapel and Thompson and fills in timeline gaps. We also learn why so many people believe that Chapel is innocent. Kipe wants the audience to hear the podcast and decide for themselves.

Episode 2 dives into Gwinnett County, Georgia’s corruption in the early 1990s. Chapel found himself caught in this web. Kipe dug into Chapel’s history and uncovered info about the town’s corrupt police department, drug trafficking, crime rings, body builders, a KGB/CIA double agent, bodybuilders, steroids, and murder. The countless twists and turns this story takes will have listeners eager to binge all episodes at once.

“In the Land of Lies” also features original music by Kipe. We recommend this podcast for fans of “Crooked City: Youngstown, OH” and “Dead End: A New Jersey Political Murder Mystery.
