Power, corruption, and a car bombing: ‘Who Killed Daphne?’ investigates a prominent Maltese journalist’s death
Wondery presents the true crime podcast, “Who Killed Daphne?” In 2017, prominent Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was killed by a car bomb outside her home, prompting family, journalists, and law enforcement to search for her killer. This investigation unearthed secrets with major consequences, going beyond the Mediterranean Island and traced back to Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s resignation in 2019 when his associates were linked to the crime.
Following Daphne’s death, investigative journalists, including podcast host Stephen Grey, joined forces and continued her work. In her 30 year career, Daphne dug deep and exposed networks of corruption on the local, national, and international levels. She openly criticized the government and ran a blog called Running Commentary, accusing Maltese politicians and more officials of corruption. For example, Daphne connected PM Joseph Muscat to the Panama Papers scandal showing how the rich exploited tax havens.
“Who Killed Daphne?” examines a compelling story loaded with corruption, power, and a woman’s quest for truth. Stream the 6-part series from episode 1 to learn Daphne’s backstory and hear the journalists’ investigation unfold in episodes less than an hour.
With public interest in the case and her family’s search for justice, journalists discovered clues that brought them closer to the killers. In the podcast’s first episode, listeners learn that Daphne’s son, Matthew, uncovered what Daphne knew about Malta’s elite, scandals, and sketchy business dealings.
By episode 2, Stephen shares what he and the team of journalists found, including a list of Daphne’s powerful enemies. In this series, Stephen will share conversations with fellow journalists and her family.
