‘TikTok Bachelor’ Matt Wurnig dished on his date-choosing process across the country in ’50 Dates 50 States’

“TikTok Bachelor” Matt Wurnig joined Podsauce to chat about leveling up his dating game with “50 Dates 50 States.” In the podcast that started on TikTok, Matt travels to all 50 states and goes on a date with a different girl in each.

After college, Matt was working for a baseball team and told his parents he was quitting his full-time job to travel, date women, build his brand, and create a following. COVID-19 added an extra challenge for season 1, as he went on virtual dates and shared his experiences with the world.

Now, Matt travels IRL to dates, and video-called Podsauce from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His original date cancelled that night, so he had to find another candidate fast. Matt shared his process for choosing potential dates and said this season received over 10,000 applications.

For dating, Matt has a vetting process. He looks at their locations and tries to sync up with other cities he already has work or interviews in, and he’s especially interested in towns he’s yet to visit. He carefully combs through each dater’s profile, looks at their age, and prefers when social media accounts are linked so he can see their interests as well as if he’s attracted to them. Alesha loved that Matt asks daters to include their date ideas in the profile and they get bonus points for creativity.

Dax asked what would happen to his brand if he actually fell in love with one of these women. Matt said season 1 felt more like platonic hangs, where at the end of season 2, there’s an almost Bachelor-style “winner” who will join Matt in Puerto Rico for 4 nights.

Matt’s swanky, road trip vehicle of choice is the customized “50 Dates 50 States” Dodge Challenger, as seen in the podcast’s image. Matt told Dax and Alesha that he pays for all dates, and his revenue streams include sponsorships, merch, TikTok, YouTube, and other business opportunities.

Matt spilled that his match in California is a second date with Sammy from season 1. Alesha asked about Matt’s dating pool and he said last season, they all were Tinder matches, so they had to match with him too. Dax asked Matt which state has the prettiest girls.
