‘#IDKMYDE’ host and ‘Wild ‘N Out’ alum B Daht talks about the shocking, dark roots of phrases we use everyday

March 23, 2022

“#IDKMYDE” stands for “I Didn’t Know Maybe You Didn’t Either.” This is the transparent “burning for learning” journey host B Daht highlights on The Black Effect Network’s “#IDKMYDE,” a podcast sharing insight into the real history of Black cultural words, phrases, and stories. Podsauce hosts Alesha and Dax chatted with the Wild ‘N Out alum, shared their podcast picks, and more in this recent episode.

Dax’s Done in a Day pick this week is the bingeable, 8-episode series “Wild Things: Siegfried & Roy,” about the world-class magicians/entertainers and the dangerous scandal that shocked their lives.

Alesha’s pick this week is “The Limits with Jay Williams,” and she thoroughly enjoyed actress Niecy Nash’s episode from February.

“#IDKMYDE” host B Daht chatted with Alesha and Dax and explained that the podcast is a transparent journey of his ignorance. After George Floyd was killed by Derek Chauvin, B Daht’s “burning for learning” was ignited, and he dove into historical content. Since 2021, “#IDKMYDE” has released over 30 episodes under 5 minutes each.

Reading The History of the United States catalyzed many questions for B Daht. The Christopher Columbus he read about was different from the historical figure he learned about in school. He questioned why America created a national holiday for such a heinous individual when holidays like Juneteenth were omitted from the national calendar at the time. He shared what he calls “reprograming the average miseducated American.”

B Daht told Podsauce about the dark origins of concepts like Hush Puppies and Buck Breaking that he previously did not know about. When he told these stories to family and friends, they didn’t know either. He started the hashtag #IDKMYDE on Instagram to share his findings, and it caught the attention of Charlamagne Tha God and the Black Effect Network. For Black History Month, “#IDKMYDE” dropped an episode every day.

Alesha listened to the episode about the Tuskegee syphilis experiment. B Daht shared why Episode 11, “Uncle Tom,” shocked him.

Alesha asked how B finds joy while dealing with the podcast’s heavy topics. He emphasized that he enjoys educating the youth while making an impact and shared a recent experience with an elementary school class. He feels blessed that his podcast reaches a wide age demographic from 8-80+ and loves entertaining whenever he has the chance.

B Daht shared his podcast picks including Black Effect Network favorites like “Drink Champs,” “Big Facts with Big Bank & DJ Scream,” “The 85 South Show with Karlous Miller, DC Young Fly and Chico Bean,” and “The Breakfast Club.” For sports podcasts, he recommends “The Player & The Fan,” “Carolina Insider,” and “Quick Blitz.” He additionally tunes into “MoreThanCultr: The PodCast” and audiobooks.

Lastly, Alesha shared this week’s Health is Wealth pick, “Food Psych Podcast with Christy Harrison.”
