On Podsauce’s super-sweet, extended chat with Charlamagne tha God, the Radio Hall of Famer, podcast host, author, creator, and media extraordinaire had so much to share. Charlamagne talked about his stellar projects, why he’d love to hear Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall on a podcast, and why he wants to be of service to Black women. Charlamagne tha God hosts “The Brilliant Idiots,” “The Breakfast Club,” “Tha God’s Honest Truth,” and founded The Black Effect Podcast Network, a place for Black creators and listeners. The Black Effect Podcast Network produces over 30 podcasts, and Charlamagne chronicled his journey to the podcast space. His friend encouraged him to try podcasts and nudged him to check out shows like “The Read.”
Since Charlamagne was already on the radio, he did not initially see the need for his own podcast. Eventually, he started “The Brilliant Idiots” with co-host Andrew Schulz. He saw podcast networks cropping up and realized no one was creating a space by and for Black voices, so he launched The Black Effect Podcast Network in partnership with iHeartRadio.
When it comes to picking up podcasts for The Black Effect Podcast Network, Charlamagne tha God pulls from hosts and shows he already loves like “The 85 South Show with Karlous Miller, DC Young Fly and Chico Bean” and “Drink Champs.”
Charlamagne tha God and Kevin Hart have known each other for years, and he is wowed and honored to have seen his success blossom over the years. The two have collaborated with SBH Productions since 2017, when they both released hit autobiographies. Charlamagne tha God discussed his best-selling books including Black Privilege, why they started the collaboration, and releasing audio versions of classic books read by celebrities.
Charlamagne talked about being inspired by “Serial” and working on Finding Tamika, a true crime audio book via Audible and SBH Productions that is topping the charts. Charlamagne shared why the future is female, how he advocates for women, and in Finding Tamika, reveals a system that often ignores missing women and people of color.
